Madrid in August 2026: What Closes and What Changes

August closures vary from business to business. Before relying on a restaurant, shop or gestoría — a private office handling paperwork — check its holiday dates. The 2026 rail works and eclipse also required their own plans.

A Telemadrid report from August 2024 estimated that roughly a third of the capital's bars and restaurants closed for part of August. Its headline gave 35% and its body 37%; neither is a 2026 count. The same report described fewer closures in the tourist centre.

That gives historical context, rather than a reliable map of open streets. Check the particular venue before booking or travelling.

Ask your gestoría which dates it closes, who covers your file and when it needs your documents. Public deadlines and appointment systems follow the particular procedure; August does not automatically suspend them.

This is the least ambiguous part of the picture, because it comes from a single official source: Adif and Renfe's own announcement of the third phase of works at Atocha Cercanías station, running August 1-28, 2026.

Five lines run reduced frequencies through the period: C-2 (20 minutes peak, 30 off-peak), C-7 (12 minutes peak on the Alcalá de Henares-Atocha stretch, 16 the rest of the day; 30 minutes between Príncipe Pío and Nuevos Ministerios), C-8a and C-8b (30 minutes peak, 60 off-peak on their El Escorial/Cercedilla-Atocha sections), and C-10 (30 minutes between Villalba and Delicias). C-10 also loses platform access at Méndez Álvaro station entirely for the month.

Separately, and already under way since July 23, the C-5 is interrupted between Villaverde Alto and Embajadores until August 16. The two sides run as independent services rather than one continuous line - Humanes/Fuenlabrada to Villaverde Alto on one side, Móstoles El Soto to Embajadores on the other, both every 10 minutes. A shuttle train connects Villaverde Alto and Méndez Álvaro, with stops at Puente Alcocer, Orcasitas and Doce de Octubre, every 35 minutes - it does not run all the way through to Embajadores.

Beyond August 28, the disruption isn't over: the Sol tunnel closes completely on two more weekends - August 29-30 and September 5-6 - affecting the C-3 and C-4 lines, which will run to provisional termini at Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios during those closures. The works plan allowed valid Cercanías tickets on specified EMT routes; check the operator's list rather than assuming every municipal bus was included.

The eclipse crossed the region on the evening of August 12. Madrid city was in the deep-partial zone; totality depended on the exact observation location. An organised activity alone did not establish that the site lay inside the totality band.

Certified solar-viewing glasses are needed throughout a partial eclipse. Ordinary sunglasses and improvised filters do not protect your eyes; optical equipment requires an appropriate filter over the front of the lens.
