Key takeaways

  • Monthly street collection is free and depends on your address.
  • You can also request a separate collection; household requests are limited to six items and less than three cubic metres.
  • Infested furniture needs a separate collection.

Two free ways to get it collected

That old sofa does not have to live on your landing until moving day. Madrid city collects household furniture and appliances for free: either use the scheduled collection for your address or ask the council for a separate pickup.

These are services for households in the city of Madrid, not businesses. You must bring the items to the agreed street location; the service does not take them down from your flat.

Option one: use your area's monthly collection

The council runs a scheduled collection once a month. The date depends on your address, so check the municipal map and district information before carrying anything downstairs.

On your area's collection date, put the items on the pavement near the nearest waste container between 9pm and 11pm. Keep the pavement and access clear. This route does not require a prior request.

Option two: ask for a separate pickup

If the monthly date does not work, request collection through Madrid Móvil, the Avisos Madrid website, or by calling 010; from outside the municipality use 91 480 00 10. The council also accepts requests at its main citizen service offices without an appointment, but not at the auxiliary offices in Aravaca, El Pardo or Las Tablas.

For a household request, the council specifies no more than six items and less than 3 m³ in total. Only one request per week is accepted, and the city says requests cannot be made for collection more than three days ahead. It asks for contact details and a list of the items. Staff will contact you to agree a collection point on the street, as close as possible to your entrance. Bring down only the items included in the request.

The official procedure says an Avisos Madrid account is needed online. Its published instructions say to choose “Aviso”, locate the address on the map, then select Retirada de elementos – muebles particulares and list the items. If the form does not work for you, call 010.

Mattresses with bedbugs need special handling

Do not leave furniture or mattresses infested with bedbugs or other parasites in the regular monthly collection. Request a special collection through Madrid Móvil, Avisos or 010 and explain the problem. The specialist service will arrange the time and place.

Wrap the items in plastic to avoid spreading the infestation. The council says to tell it if you do not have plastic; it will provide it where possible. Its detailed guidance says to bring the wrapped items out when the specialist team is at the agreed point, not before.

Check what the service accepts

Furniture, mattresses and household appliances are among the items covered. Loose sheets of glass are excluded. For unusual or large items, check the council's collection guidance or ask 010 before moving them.

If an item is still usable, the city also points residents to ReMAD, its reuse platform, and fixed recycling centres. And if you are changing address, see our guide to updating your padrón after moving.
