Madrid Wildfire Emergency: What Residents Need To Know Now

This is a major, active emergency in western Madrid. It is not a distant plume of smoke to watch from a viewpoint and it is not a normal summer fire warning.

The Comunidad de Madrid says the fires previously identified as Villa del Prado, San Martin de Valdeiglesias and Almorox have merged into one wildfire in the Sierra Oeste, now identified as #IFSierraOeste. The regional wildfire plan, INFOMA, remains at Situation 3, following the declaration of an emergency of national interest. At this level, the State directs the emergency response.

The official page lists the affected territorial area as San Martin de Valdeiglesias, Pelayos de la Presa, Villa del Prado, Aldea del Fresno, Almorox in Toledo, Chapineria, Navas del Rey and Colmenar del Arroyo. The same page reports evacuations and alerts beyond that list as the fire moves. Do not read any static municipality list as the final perimeter.

At the time of the 19:45 official update, the Comunidad de Madrid reported:

• evacuation instructions for Fresnedillas de la Oliva, in the direction of Valdemorillo;
• evacuation instructions for Robledo de Chavela, in the direction of El Escorial;
• the evacuation of Navalagamella and Zarzalejo;
• earlier evacuation measures for Chapineria, Navas del Rey and Colmenar del Arroyo; and
• confinement instructions issued for San Martin de Valdeiglesias and Pelayos de la Presa.

Evacuation and confinement are different instructions. Evacuate means leave by the route and at the time authorities specify. Confine means remain indoors or move into the urban area specified by authorities. Do not decide that driving away is safer when the instruction is to stay inside: an unplanned vehicle can enter smoke, meet a closed road or obstruct emergency traffic.

If ordered to evacuate, take identification, essential medication, phone and charger, water, keys, basic clothing and necessary supplies for children or dependent people. Keep the route clear and go only to the reception point authorities name. If you need help leaving, tell 112 or emergency personnel; do not wait silently until conditions deteriorate.

If you have pets, prepare carriers, leads, food and any medication now. Do not delay an ordered evacuation to assemble non-essential belongings.

Avoid all non-essential travel into the Sierra Oeste and the affected western municipalities. Do not drive out to see the flames, film aircraft or check a second home. Do not travel into an evacuation zone to collect someone unless emergency services have told you which route is open.

At 19:45, the regional incident page listed closures on sections of the M-507, M-540, M-501, M-541, M-510, M-512 and M-505. Those closures can expand, move or be lifted without this article changing immediately.

Before any necessary journey, check the DGT live traffic map and the Comunidad de Madrid live incident page. Follow roadblocks. A navigation app suggesting a minor-road detour is not permission to enter a closed area.

If dense smoke reduces visibility while you are driving, the regional health guidance says not to continue driving. If smoke overtakes you in the car, remain inside with the windows closed. Call 112 if you are in danger and give the clearest location you can.

Smoke is a health risk even when the flames are not close. The Comunidad de Madrid advises people exposed to smoke or ash to stay indoors where possible, close doors and windows, close other ventilation openings and set air conditioning to recirculation so it does not pull outside air inside.

Avoid exercise and other physical effort outdoors. Give particular attention to children, older people, pregnant people and anyone with respiratory or heart disease. Keep necessary medication close.

Seek medical help for difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain or burns. If symptoms are severe or immediate, call 112. The regional health page also advises contacting your health centre if smoke exposure aggravates a chronic condition or medication is needed.

Do not rely on whether you can smell smoke. Check the official Comunidad de Madrid air-quality and health page, which links to the regional monitoring map and publishes smoke guidance.

Follow emergency personnel and phone alerts immediately. The official regional guidance says to move away from the fire in the direction opposite the smoke and wind, and to seek safer areas such as firebreaks, rivers, roads or already burned ground if caught outside. This is last-resort guidance, not a reason to ignore an evacuation order or improvise a route.

Do not attempt to fight a fast-moving wildfire yourself. Report a new fire or an immediate threat to 112, stating what you see, your location, the direction of the smoke or flames and whether anyone is trapped or injured.

Keep calls brief and factual. Do not call 112 for general news, road planning or reassurance; unnecessary calls compete with people reporting immediate danger.

• ASEM 112 / Comunidad de Madrid — emergency information and links to official social accounts. The page also links to the official My112 app, which can receive alerts and share a caller's precise location with the emergency centre.
• DGT live traffic map — current road incidents and closures. Check it immediately before necessary travel.
• Comunidad de Madrid air quality and health — official smoke precautions and regional air-quality data.
• AEMET weather warnings — official warnings for heat, wind and other dangerous weather conditions.

Also monitor your ayuntamiento — your municipal council — and local police or Protección Civil, but verify that you are looking at the council's real website or account. Screenshots and forwarded voice messages lose timestamps and context quickly.

If you are in western Madrid, charge your phone, enable emergency alerts, keep identification and medication together, prepare dependent people and pets, and check the live regional page now. If an official instruction arrives, follow it without delay.

If you are elsewhere in the region, avoid the affected area, do not add traffic to western roads, monitor smoke conditions and check on vulnerable relatives or friends without asking them to travel.

Everyone should resist sharing old road lists, invented causes, unverified maps or dramatic footage presented as live. In an emergency, a confident but outdated post can send someone toward a closure or away from the reception point assigned to them.

The situation is serious. Use official, timestamped information and leave roads and phone lines available for the people who need them most.
