This weekend during mourning
Spain’s official mourning for the victims of the Urda train crash runs from 29 to 31 October. The events below remain listed by their organisers, but schedules may change; check the venue before travelling.
Start with a last chance
Robert Frank’s The Americans closes on Sunday. The Casa de México altar stays longer, but this weekend is a good time to see it alongside Madrid’s other Día de Muertos displays. For something outdoors, the Recoletos craft market runs through Monday.
Friday to Sunday: Robert Frank’s America
At Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Robert Frank & Los Americanos brings together the photographer’s series from his journey across the United States in the 1950s. It is the final weekend: the exhibition ends Sunday 1 November. Entry is free.
Find the space at Calle de Fuencarral, 3. The venue lists weekend and public-holiday opening hours of 11:00–20:00. Check its visitor page before setting off.
Saturday and Sunday: an altar in Chamberí
The Casa de México altar, ¡Viva la vida!, is dedicated to Mexican composer Agustín Lara and draws on the atmosphere of a Michoacán cemetery. The foundation is at Calle de Alberto Aguilera, 20.
Admission is free. The city lists unreserved weekend visits from 10:00 to 12:45; reserved guided visits are currently sold out; the foundation also describes a separate queue for visitors without reservations. The altar continues until 8 November, so you can come back if the weekend queue is too long.
Other free altars are listed at CentroCentro, the Palacio de Cristal de Arganzuela and the Montaña de los Gatos in El Retiro through 2 November. Check the city’s guide for each venue before building a route.
A market stroll on Recoletos
The autumn craft market on Paseo de Recoletos continues through 2 November. The Madrid craft association’s fair brings together makers working in ceramics, leather, jewellery, wood and other materials. Browse the stalls as part of a walk rather than committing to a full afternoon.
Family option: puppets in El Retiro
The city lists Varieté Halloween at the Teatro de Títeres in El Retiro on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November at 12:30. It is a 40-minute puppet show recommended for ages 5 and up. Free tickets require advance download from 10:00 on Friday 30 October, with a maximum of four per user; every child needs a ticket. Once ticket holders are seated, remaining seats go to those waiting in arrival order. Check the theatre listing for current ticket availability. The theatre is on Avenida de México.
Some municipalities around Madrid have postponed Halloween activities during the national mourning period. Event status can change: check the organiser’s current notice before relying on a specific session.
