Water, ice and a former reservoir

Sebastião Salgado's Aqua Mater opens at Fundación Canal on 28 October, bringing photographs of water and ice into a place once built to store Madrid's drinking water.

The exhibition combines selections from Aqua Mater and Glaciares: nearly 100 large-format black-and-white photographs take visitors from Antarctica and Patagonia to the Amazon and the Himalayas. Lélia Wanick Salgado curated the Madrid presentation.

The setting is part of the appeal. Sala Castellana 214 is a former underground reservoir with high brick arches, just by Plaza de Castilla. Allow around 90 minutes for the visit, according to the organisers.

Plan your visit

The exhibition is at Paseo de la Castellana 214, a short walk from Plaza de Castilla metro (lines 1, 9 and 10). It opens Wednesday to Monday, 11:00–22:00; the last entry is at 20:30. Tuesdays are closed.

Standard general admission is €15; on Mondays it is €13.50. Reduced and free categories are available: check the organiser's current conditions and tickets before booking. Tickets are sold online and at the venue, subject to availability. Entry is timed, so booking ahead is useful if you have a particular slot in mind.

Photographs without flash are permitted for personal use. Check the official exhibition page for current details before travelling.
